MR. EMERSON’S REVOLUTION
Emerson was our first public intellectual, helping define a nascent American culture in the decades after our Revolution. He urged his countrymen, psychologically still dependent on England, to banish false traditions and leap forward to a new day of self-confidence, curiosity, and achievement, all with faith in an Over Soul, or World Soul, and a tangible Moral Law. Emerson’s interests spanned the humanities and the sciences, making him insist on their unity. As an active abolitionist and pro-women’s rights advocate, he also revolutionized our social life. In every sphere, he radicalized our souls. In this video, we will see Emerson’s vast influence in his day and in our own time, because, like him, we are still half-idealistic and half-pragmatic (90 min.).
